From the Japanese Noh Drama ‘Yashima,’ translated by Royall Tyler

“You have before you a monk lately come from Miyako. Never having seen Shikoku, I have set my heart on a pilgrimage through the provinces of the west.”

-Traveling monks figure again and again in Japanese literature. There are important pilgrimage sites throughout Japan, but Shikoku figures prominently as a holy destination.
